the art of pleating

A Timeless Craft Reimagined

At Cahaya Studios, we believe that fashion is not just about clothing—it’s about storytelling through texture, movement, and precision. One of the most exquisite techniques that embody this philosophy is pleating, an art form that transforms fabric into dynamic, sculptural masterpieces.

The Heritage of Pleating

Pleating dates back centuries, with roots in ancient Egyptian and Greek attire, where intricately folded fabrics symbolized status and artistry. In the 20th century, designers like Madame Grès and Issey Miyake revolutionized pleating, blending tradition with avant-garde innovation. Today, pleating remains a hallmark of high fashion, celebrated for its ability to create rhythm, volume, and fluidity.

The Craft Behind the Creations

Pleating is a meticulous process that demands both technical skill and creative vision. At Cahaya Studios, we employ:

  • Hand Pleating – Each fold is carefully measured and pressed, ensuring precision and uniqueness.

  • Machine Pleating – Modern methods allow for permanent, wrinkle-resistant designs that retain their shape beautifully.

The Art of Pleating: Shaping Fabric with Precision

Pleating is the art of folding fabric into different shapes, creating striking variations in volume and texture. At Cahaya Studios, we master this technique to craft garments with depth, movement, and sophistication.

How Pleating Works

To pleat fabric, you need a pattern (or mould)—typically made of two identically folded card pieces that fit together. Many moulds also include an outer wrapper to protect the pattern during the heating process.

Step-by-Step Pleating Process:

  1. Prepare the Pattern

    • Separate the two card pieces and lay one flat on a table.

  2. Position the Fabric

    • Place your fabric smoothly over the bottom card.

    • Cover it with the top part of the pattern, sandwiching the fabric inside.

  3. Fold & Secure

    • Carefully fold the entire pattern (with the fabric inside) into its intended shape.

    • Roll it tightly to ensure crisp, even pleats.

  4. Heat-Set the Pleats

    • Place the rolled pattern in a steam cabinet to set the fabric into its new form.

  5. Cool & Release

    • Once cooled, carefully remove the fabric—it should now hold the pleated shape permanently.

This method allows for intricate, consistent pleating, from basket pleats to delicate accordion folds. At Cahaya Studios, we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques to transform fabric into wearable art.At Cahaya Studios, we honor this ancient craft while pushing its boundaries—whether through bold contemporary designs or delicate, timeless elegance. Pleating is not just a technique; it’s a celebration of artistry in motion.
